TRAFFIC RULES IN MALAYSIA

It would be a pity if your trip to Sepang for the MotoGP race would come with a fine. Check out our tips on how to enjoy the MotoGP race at Sepang International Circuit without extra costs.

Driving Side

Malaysians drive on the left-hand side of the road, with steering wheels on the right side of vehicles, following the British system.

Seat Belts

Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, both in the front and back seats.

Speed Limits

  • Highways: 110 km/h (some stretches are reduced to 90 km/h).
  • Urban Areas: 50-60 km/h.
  • Residential Areas: 30-40 km/h. Speed limits are strictly enforced with the use of speed cameras, especially on highways.

Driving Licence

Foreigners with an international driving licence or a licence in English can drive in Malaysia for up to 90 days. After that, they may need to convert their licence to a local one.

Alcohol Limit

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%. However, random checks by the police are common, and penalties for driving under the influence can include hefty fines and imprisonment.

Child Safety

It is compulsory for children under 135 cm to be seated in a proper child seat. Fines are imposed if child safety seats are not used.

Road Sign

Most road signs are in Bahasa Malaysia (Malay), but many important signs, especially in urban areas, are also in English. Common signs include "Berhenti" for "Stop" and "Keluar" for "Exit."

Roundabouts

Vehicles entering a roundabout must give way to traffic already on it. However, be cautious, as this rule is not always followed strictly by all drivers.

Toll Roads

Many highways are toll roads. Payment is usually made via the Touch 'n Go or SmartTAG electronic payment system. Ensure you have enough balance before entering a toll highway.

Parking

In most urban areas, parking is regulated with metres or coupon systems. Illegally parked cars may be fined, clamped, or towed.
